I really enjoyed this book, I got it for christmas from a relative and at girst my mum didn't want to let me read it. She let me read it and I am very glad she did, I learnt a lot from this book. I learnt a lot about drugs and how people can struggle to escape them. I definitely think I am old enough to cope with the issues in the book but think it might be too much for my younger brother, I think it might scare him a bit too much. However, it has made me decide never to use drugs and I think my brother should read it when he is old enough. A very good book!

"Junk" is such a complicated book. For a start, you empathise with the characters right away. I think we all see a bit of ourselves in shy, awkward Tar. And as well, which teenager doesn't want to do exactly as Gemma does, and rebel? But then it all goes downhill; we know these kids are gonna fall into temptation, we want to stop it, but I think the main thing is no one on earth could have protected them from themselves. You hate Gemma and Lily and the rest for pushing Tar into heroin, but in the end you can't help cursing his own, stupid weakness. I think the real hero of the story is Gemma, who worked hard and fought against the addiction. This story tells us that we, like Tar, are incredibly vulnerable, and addicts aren't special people; any one of us could become one.

When Ifirst read the front cover on this book I thought - typical love story - boy meets girl, girl meets boy, fall in love, split up get back together. I have been wrong about MANY books like this one. One - Noughts and Crosses - That was thebest love story I ever read. But I'm here to review junk not Noughts and Crosses, so... I was definatly wrong about Junk. It was the second best love story I've ever read. It made me, when Gemma and Tar first started taking junk think - who this book is portraing herion in posative way, then later on I relised what this book was actually saying- it may make you feel good - but it definatly doesn't do you want good- it's adictive and it ruins your life. At the end of Noughts and Crosses I cried, but at the end of Junk, I realised that even though the ending was sad it had a meaning - Noughts and Crosses took racism to another level, it speaks the truth, it teachs a lesson, this - this forces a lesson this changes your thoughs of life.

Wow. Junk was one of the most up-lifting, eye-opening books I've ever read-- and I've read my fair share. The story of the character's lives are just so interesting, it's hard to believe that it's fiction. It's one of my favourites.

This book is a must read if you are a teenager, it tells you alot about life on the street and how hard it can be to run away and leave everything behind. I also liked how it shows just how easy it is to get into any kind of drugs.....from dope to junk and back. Great story for everyone. I reccomend all books

I really loved the book. I couldn't stop reading when i started it. It helped me see life from other perspectives,to understand the life of people who have had it hard or think that have had it hard. Personally, it also gave me a very good idea of what many people go through and why. Everyone has their own reasons to do what they do and I'm nobody to judge people, but some just give up too quickly and don't think about consequences (talking about Gemma here.Typical teenage girl). Most of the time while reading it I stopped to think about what was happening, the reasons, possible consequences,I even could relate to it in a certain way.I mean to say it made me think about many things, and I really appreciate that in a book. It's not exactly a real story, but I'm sure there are several people in the same situation. One last thing to say: Read It.

AMAZING is the only word. I have read it twice now and it is truely amazing and so sad. Obviously i cannot compare the 'Junk' side of the book to my own life but the feelings that Gemma goes through from the age of 14 - 18 are so accurate to what teenage girls go through now. It is very similar to 'Warehouse' by Keith Grey and if LOVED this book then READ that one definately! The sadness at the end is overwhelming i was crying! I just enjoyed it so much! I wish there were more books like these - i may read it again in the near future! THANK YOU for such a brilliant, fantastic, thrilling book!

I think junk is really good (the book that is!)I have been reading it at school in english and its opened my eyes and shown that taking heroin is really bad, and very addictive. Also I think this book glamorises heroin, so people are more likely to try i; and maybe get addicted if they like it. but towards the end it doesnt, and i think its good how Melvin portryed heroin.

I liked the book because of the fact that it concerns a present situation in our society. The readers can identify themselves to the characters of the book and understand them... Why they did ran away and how they got into drugs... It is interesting to see how it is in reality: The writer doesn't just tell you 'DO NOT TOUCH DRUGS'. He just describes the life of teenagers who are making choices like you and me. People often don't try to understand why teenagers (or even adults) want to take drugs. They just consider them as being a minor part of aur society that doesn't diserve any attention or help. The author of the book really wanted to show the readers how addicted people live...

I think Junk is a great book i loved it, it was so realistic, although Melvin Burges does not tell us not to touch drugs he lets us make up our own mind as he admits how good Heroin can make you feel AT FIRST. Instead of feeling a personal disgust for what these characters are doing you feel truely sorry for how bad they have gotten. They are living a way they have been shown as they have no-one to tell them what they have done wrong and have no-one to answer to which was infact the reason they ran away from home in the first place. They where all extremely vulnerable especially Tar and later got caught up in drugs and soon developed an addiction.Junk shows that it could happen to anyone anywhere. Junk is a very good book as it not only tells you the dangers it also teaches you not to 'experiment' with drugs as it will most likely lead to an addiction. Tar was the best character i felt so sorry for him as it was not his idea to take heroin i thought it was the peer pressure.

Junk by Melvin Burgess is a novel full of so much. The emotions of teenagers today are running high and as teenagers we are prone to do stupid and silly things to escape from it, Junk outlines this so well and develops an awareness of it. The characters come to life and instead of feeling a personal disgust for what they are doing you truly feel bad and sorry about how bad they have gotten. They are in a whirlwind of sex, drugs and pure freedom. They dont see their mistakes as mistakes but living and it is true. They are living the way they have been shown - with no-one telling them what to do, they have no-one to answer to and that is what they left for in the first place. They were vunerable and got caught up in drugs and developed and addiction. Junk shows that it could happen to anyone - you or me and that is amazing. Junk is the best book i have ever read and that is alot. Coll.

This book is ASTOUNDING, but not for the fainthearted. I love it for its honesty, a dizzying fly-on-the-wall through a dark world with a trap in it. What sets this book apart is the fact that doesn't make us decide not to touch drugs using the standard "they'll ruin your life don't you dare full stop" approach. Instead, Melvin admits the fact of how good the characters feel when they first discover junk. I was riveted on the passages describing their "hits" until I began to feel I felt "Lady Heroin's" siren allure. It was the fright as I realised this, that I had begun to fall for it, that made me resolve "By God I will never let that spell get me." And I think the realisation of that power will scare others away from "experimenting" too. Well done Mr Burgess, I believe you have saved many teens from becoming future slaves of the Lady. And God help all the Lilys out there

This was a wonderful mix of all the teenage emotions, love, hate, fear, peer pressure and depression. It illustrated the truly devasting effects drugs have on young people and as I delved deeper and deeper into the book I found I could relate to it more and more. It touched part of me and I have managed never to try drugs or risk my life for something that stupid. However, I did not judge the characters instead my whole opinion on drugs and their users changed and I find I am not so quick to look at people and judge them because of their 'passtimes.'

I loved this book as I can really relate to it, I just couldnt put it down. Most of my friends or people I know meet up and have a smoke etc, but not anything as heavy as herion, however some of them are going that way unfortunatly, and so the main character, Gemma, turned into a girl I know very well, and I'm sure I have seen her downfall. The emotions in "Junk" by Melvin Burgess are so real I almost felt I was witnessing what was going on. I got depressed when the characters got depressed but when they were happy I didnt feel the same way, because the only reason they were was because of the poison that is, herion. I knew by the time Gemma started taking it everthing was not going to go very well but the ending still surprised me. This book really touched me, and if I could just get others to read it, I'm sure it would make them think twice about "trying new things" as I am told on a regular basis. Burgess has the teenagers emotions, personalties and how they relate to things down to perfection, and thats why this book is so believable. "Junk" is utter brilliance.

I think that the play "junk" is a highly charged drama. I think that this book is not just entertaining but it is also educational at the same time. All these issues such as drugs, teenage pregancy, homelessness e.t.c relate to real teenagers lifes. It shows how easy it is to fall deeper and deeper into trouble and how easy it is for a teenager to live a darker way of life.

This book was really just saying what happens alot these days in life. Alot kids run away at young ages and lots of them do drugs. My best friends older sister ran away at 13 and she became addicted to heroin and this book was actually alot like what she said her life was like when she ran away. she came back at 20 wit a 5 year old daughter. almost everything in this book was like what happened to her when she ran away. The "father" of her baby was still a drugy so they never really saw each other. Either then some differences after i read the book it reminded me of what my friends sister told us when she came back.

It shows our reality and evokes an atmosphere of being lucky not to live in conditions like that!I heard parents didnt like the book? Why? Are they afraid of the reality????Instead of making this book bad, they should think about their family situation, because it wasnt only Tars and Gemmas fault, why do you think they left home??? Because their parents didnt not understand them and the situation they are involved in...THINK ABOUT IT!

This is one of those books where you read lines over and over again until you are reciting excerpts from it because the words are dripping with so much power. Brilliant, absolutley brilliant. I am 13 and this book shed some light on things I knew were out there but left it at that, never questioning it once. What I enjoyed most about this book is the irony of it all to begin with, noticing the vicious circle that just goes on and on when you are involved with some of the issues that are in this book. The moral of this story is powerful. After you read this, you stop and take a moment to say "wow, it's real, this is how it happens" - Junk - was really an eye opener for me. Despite the mature themes, I would recommend this book to children of all ages because it is important that we make our selves aware of the reality of things because it is not always that simple.

I'll tell you a little about Junk. The main characters are Tar and Gemma, who are both fourteen years old. They both enjoy spending time with each other. The main features in Junk are: sex and drugs. Junk is set in Bristol roughly in the early and the middle 1980s. The whole book is true, every word of it.

This book was okay, but I've read better. I found the writer was trying to do something with this book, but he didn't achieve it. People who enjoy reading books like this will most likey enjoy it, but for people with more ecclectic tastes will not like it that much. The fact that it is in first person narrative makes the perception a little more narrow, and you don't get the description of surroundings and settings as much, but all in all, it was not THAT bad.

I think Junk is and excellent book which showed me what drugs are all about. It really explained how people get into drugs, how it affects their life and the affects of getting addicted. It has definately conviced me never to get into anything like that. It is a really good story, some bits are scary others happy and others sad. It also has other things in it like prostitution and stealing. I think it is well written and it is definately worth reading it.

i thought it was very realistic, but very gross in places. the trauma that tar has to go thrugh with his mum, then squatting, getting into serious drugs, then going into a detox centre, was all very scary, then on top of all that, having a baby.

Not only is it an extremely interesting book to read, but also gives teenagers an awareness of the drug itself and the situations you can get yourself into, and the price you have to pay.

This read like an honest account of the nightmare of being addicted to something. A fascinating read for someone with no connection to drug taking and something to be read by those on the fringes of groups involved in it.
