I first read this book when I was on holiday in Croatia, it was so gripping that I couldn't put it down, but when I did, the hot sun melted the glue so some pages started coming out because I had propped it in a pointy n shape so that I could keep the page! This is an amazing book, and I have already told lots of people, and they are reading it to! Also, if, like me, you just want more and more, Eva Ibbotson has another book that is quite simular called 'The star of Kazan' which is exellent! Finnaly, read this book, it is the best EVER, and even if you don't like books I can assure you that you will like this book!!!! Read this book!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the book Journey to the river sea because it is a book of adventure and the author gives many redherrings. I also like this book because it is a very interesting book because it shows how Maia is imagining all the things that the amazon is going to be like and how her two new sisters are going to be like and then when she actually gets there she loves the senery but she really dislikes her new sisters, Beatrice and Gwendolyn. I think that Eva Ibbotson is a great author because she makes her stories magical and exciting. And those are the kind of books that I read.

I think this is an eciting book!! This book is about an exciting adventure set on the Amazon River in Brazil, known locally as the River Sea. The main character is Maia, an orphan who is sent from school in England to live in Brazil with her only remaining relatives, the Carters. This happens because her parents died in a car accident, so she goes to live with the arters family although she didn't even know them. Maia dreams of having adventures in Brazil and of the wonderful things she will see and the loving family she will have. Miss Minton is the Carter family’s new governess and she travels with Maia on her long journey. They journey by boat and on the voyage become friendly with Clovis, a boy actor who wishes he could return to England. This friendship becomes very important later in the story Maia soon realises that the Carters are not the ideal family she hoped they would be. They don’t like mixing with the natives or eating local food. They want to live as if they were still in England. Maia befriends Finn, a mysterious boy who seems almost native and is hiding in the jungle near her home. She discovers he is heir to a family fortune back in England and is being searched for by agents of his family in Brazil. Maia and her friends must do everything they can to stop Finn being taken back to England with exciting results. : Maia was a person who don´t had a family and she lived in a orphanage. One day she was invited to go to Amazon in Brazil. She would live with Carter´s family, Mrs. Carter had twins. She thought the twins were really nice, but they wasn't. And then the adventure starts... Maia used to leave at England, and she was an orphan. Even though she didn't have parents, she was a happy and girl, but that was WAY before she moved to the Amazon, also known as Green Hell. The Carters, that were from the Amazon, adopted her, because her father had left her a LOT OF MONEY, and that's what they mostly cared about. At least she thought she would have some fun with the Twins(Carters), which seemed to be sweet and lovely, but they ABSOLUTLY weren't; they were cruel, evil and had black hearts (whoah). During her journey she met new and different friends and had many adventures on the green hell, but she also faced huge obstacles. Maia impresses me: she doesn't judge people by what they look, differently from most of the people. She lets diversity take over her life...That's a really really,ABSOLUTELY, sweet thing to do! WAY TO GO MAIA...I hoped people could all act like her!

For my book report I went to the library to find a book I would like to see, then I saw Journey to the River Sea. Right away I knew that was the book I will read because I knew it would be good. It's about a girl who moves to the amazon with her governess Miss.Minton and reveals that this is the place, this is the life she wants. It is a fantastic book and the best book I ever read and my favourite one. I usually don't like reading but when i started reading this book I couldn't close it. It was fill of things I love to read about; nature, adventures and more. When I was reading this book I could see it happening in my mind, I felt like I was Maia going thru it. I really liked the character Maia as she brave, trustworthy and is helpful. This book is great for anyone to read.I loved the book and it was totally written well, full of imagination and a great story.

Not so long ago, I read a book named Journey to the river sea by Eva Ibbotson . I have to say that it is one of the best books that I have ever read. I would say that the genre of this book would be adventure, I would say this because it is action packed, with happy and sad moments. The story is about an orphan who's parents died when she was little. Her guardian Mr Murray wanted the best for her, so when he found Maia’s only relatives, he wasted no time getting them together. A countess named Miss Minton took Maia to the Amazon where her relatives the Carter’s lived. But the Carter’s didn’t turn out to be half as nice as Maia was expecting. However Maia loved the Amazon and made two of the best friends she had ever had there. She loved exploring the land and had many an adventure there. Finally Miss Minton and Maia moved to a different family called the Helsinki’s where Maia was adopted and Miss Minton worked as their governess. I found the story really gripping, It made me want to laugh sometimes and cry at other times which I think is one of the key characteristics for a good book. The only thing I didn’t like about the story was how the ending was a bit blunt, all it said was “and then they all went home” but for me that didn’t really affect the overall impression of the book. My favourite character is Maia, this is because of her great personality and her strength to get through even when everything else is against her. My least favourite characters were the twin, as they were absolutely horrible to Maia and did everything they could to get their own way, I admire Maia because if the twins were my relatives I would not have as much patience as she had. I think that the way the author wrote this story is excellent and I can’t wait to read another of her books. This book is a must read and I would recommend it to anyone , whatever taste they have in books!

I think this book is very exciting and interesting.I thought it was very gripping and made me want to read on as soon as i started this brilliant book.I felt that i could relate to the main charicter a lot as she is about the same age as me, I think the auther is amazing at writing as she managed to make me feel all of Mya's emotions and feelings ware as with some books you may feel sorry for them if something bad has happened. With this book however i actually felt sad inside me if something bad were to happen which i think means happiness. HOORAY!!!!!

What makes this such a great book is that it is so good you can read it over and over and not get tired. The story stays in your mind a while after you finish. That is the kind of book that is really good. Journey to the River Sea is a beautiful story and the Amzaon sounds so, so amazing!! I relly loved it and hope Eva Ibbotson writes more books like it, maybe for a little older *__~

This is a very remarkable book!! I have read everything from Harry Potter to Alice in Wonderland but this has to be my favorite book ever!! It has a really cool setting place and I love how different the characters are. The twins are the funniest and Mrs. Carter is the worst. I also didn't like that man who "rescued" them from the Xanti. I am sure almost everyone who has read the book agrees that it is very entertaining and really touching in the end. If you haven't read it and like adventure, the amazon, the 1910s, mystery, suspense romance and humor read this because it has everything you could want in a book!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the best, most well written excellent captivating story i have evr read and i think ever will read, not that i don't love to read!! it is the kind of book where as soon as you finish you sigh and have to begin all over again. one thing i really love is how realistic the characters are. even maia the heroine is not perfect and the bad people are very well described. i also have really become interested in the time period. it is very realistic in some of the characters' prejudice which bothered me but mostly because i knew it had really existed. i love love love the suspense of how you have to wait to find out what happened to maia in the fire and what happened when clovis told sir aubrey who he really was. it's a really thrilling book, with a fitting ending. i read somewhere it is for "ages 9-12" but i don't think so at all. it has a lot of deeper layers that you wouldn't notice at younger ages. well sorry i talk so so much but it really is the BESt and i don't see why so many people just put "we read it in school i like it it's good." that does not make others want to read it!!

i am fifteen and a few years ago i would not have thought i'd still be reading this book. when i first read it it didnt really capture me and i liked it but skipped a lot. i tend to skip whenever something is not exciting enough for me and eva ibbotson does tend to give you a whole lot more history than you want to know. but then after reading other things i went back to the library and was amazed at how this boook changed!! there was so much that is now obvious to me that i completely missed. i even forgot what the book was really about!! it had me on the edge of my seat, there's no better way to put it. one of my favorite scenes is where maia explains what it is to be alone in the world. i thought that was so touching what finn said, i won't spoil it for you!! i also like the ending. it was sort of unclear what happened after miss minton turned the professor down i wonder if they ever got back together. but anyways, the ending was absolutely perfect. if it had closed with maia finn and clovis separate in england that would have been a real rip off of a book!! a happy ending is not right for all stories but it fit this one. ps ONE MORE THING i love how clovis says can i have maia when she's grown up and finn is like no. that was great. he and maia are cut out for each other, definitly. both are so alike, stubborn and adventurous!! ok bye sorry to bore you!!

I am really not the book-worm type. But this was different My mum brought the book home from the library one day, saying that I spend too much time on the computer. So I thought I should give it a chance. When I started it I found that it was impossible to put down. My mum was practically trying to pull the book off me, I was engrossed in it. I cant tell you how good that book was. I felt like I wanted to read it over and over again, so when My mum had to take the book back to the library I was reluctant to let it go. A few months later it was my birthday and guess what I got as my present a brand new hardback copy of Journey to the River Sea!

This was a really easygoing, enjoyable read. I'd reccommed it to anyone who likes Jaqueline Wilson as well, as the style is similar but has a more sophisticated, twisting story. The read does get a bit slow in the middle but it picks up for a fantastic ending. (Even though they pointlessly return to England to go back to the Amazon - a bit odd.) Its got some really good description about the house, the twins, and Maia, not forgetting the changable Miss Minton!

She put up with Gwendolynn and Beattrice, i don't think i could have! They were really selfish and treated Maia horribly. I didn't like Miss Minton at first, but then towards the end i really liked her, she was a level headed woman with a soft heart. My favourite part was when Maia fooled the twins. I dont think this book was exciting or a "must read", the paragraphing and layout of the story was confusing. The characters were unbeleivable and seemed too mature for there age. I think the use of elipses, were over used which made the feeling of suspense amd tension, very unoticable. I didnt feel a connection to the characters, and didnt feel the urge, to keep on reading the book.

It was interesting that it was called the river sea. I really like how Eva named it Journey to the River Sea in stead of Journey to the Amazon River. We did the book for a group reading assignment, and were asked to do a project at the end of the book. We have decieded to do a buffet from the kinds of fruit and rice and stuff they eat there and feed it to the give it to the rest of the class. It was such a good book we read it in about a week. I could only say, this book is so far the best book i have ever read. I love the book. I read it when I was 10 years old. And then, every year I would go to the library and then find it, and borrow it again. I would always stay up at night to finish reading it in one day. Eva Ibbotson's 'Journey To the River Sea' never fails to hook you like a too big worm for a little fish just trying to gobble it all up as fast as it can. Every time you read it, you would always get a different type of feeling. But then, there is always a part that always take place. It's at the end of the book, where Finn Taverner comes running to Maia and then announcing that he is going home and then Miss Minton comes out wiping her eyes saying, 'We're all going home.' That was the part that made me cry all the time. It was a very good happy ending, and it brings sweet feelings into you. The author wrote it like as if she has been there herself and then she has experienced it before. I never believed that someone can write so good until the day I picked up the book and finished reading it. If I were to be able to actually meet up with Eva Ibbotson, first of all I would thank her for writing such a fabolous book and then second I would ask her to write a sequel to the book ^_^. I was also really happy that Maia ended up with Finn. They are like... (LOL) perfect couples?

Journey to the river sea is one of those books that once you start reading it you can't put it down!! I have not read any of Eva's other books but found with this one that she kept you engaged, i felt that when she introduced a new character she didn't give you a full explanation which kept you intreged. Eva lets you make you own opinion and view in your head of certain scenes etc. Good book.

i think the book was really exciting how two young children have a wonderful adventure and they see lots of things it is brill. All the characters contrasted really well appart from mr Carter as when his story popped up he didn't seem to fit in. Eva Ibbotson describes the scenery really well but still gives us that extra bit of freedom to have our own oppinions on the surroundings. It's a really great book

Our teacher told us to read a book for the winter holidays and when we got back we would write a book report on it. I read lots of books but i have to say that journey to the river sea, was by far the best book I have ever read. It turns out that 7 people in my class did journey to a river sea for their book report. If you are looking for a book full of mystery, romance, suspicion, sadness and happiness, this book has the whole package. So go to your public library or a book store near you and get "JOURNEY TO THE RIVER SEA" P.S. Maia was my favorite character because she was both heroic and adventures.

I loved Journey to the River Sea. I read it over and over so much that I cried every time I got to near the end when Maia and Finn were separated then reunited again. I felt as though I was really in the book, instead of being just a reader. I'm not sure I read correctly or not, I read it many times, but the way I interpreted it was that in the end, Maia and Miss Minton when back to the Amazon, while Finn and Clovis stayed in England. I thought that that was really sad. Maybe I read wrong. Overall, this book is amazing!

This book was amazing the way that Eva Ibbotson wrote was just beautiful. The book caught my attention because the front cover is so beautifully illustrated. Anyways, this book had a whirlwind of adventure and humour. I enjoyed it because it showed that in the end friendship, courage and how the truth and being an amazing actor (just kidding) can prevail. I would recomend this book highly. I think that if I ever went to the Amazon I would definitley want a friend like Finn to help guide me through the Amazon. The funniest part in the book was when Miss Minton took off her corset and through it down the river that cracked me up. Thanks TTYL

I'm Irish-Peruvian, so obviously the Amazon interests me widely. Ever tried swimming in it? I mean, it's so incredibly big... But back on topic: What can I say? Wonderful characters, I especially like the way Gwendolyn and Beatrice (the two cousins) are portrayed. The story entwines so many different aspects of a girl a few years behind her teens - there's the adventure, the slightly hidden love aspects, and the adventure. Yes, there is a lot of adventure. One of those book which has a very bad point about it - when it ends!

This was a Truly excellent book. I've never been interested the Amazon, but I picked it up because it was by Eva Ibbotson. I've red some of her books, but this is the best by far. My only complaint was that the end seemed to fall apart. Finnn is talking with Clovis, and then he is running up to Maia's boarding school. I would really like to know what hapened with Clovis. He reminds me so much of this boy I know. The characters are so real, I know someone like Clovis, I know someone like Maia, I even know someone like Miss Minton. This was a great book, and I would recomend it to anyone, but especially if you have some Prior knowledge of the time period.

This book is one of the best books. I have read it twice but i wanted to give my second opinion. I think it was funny when Clovis asked if he could have Maia when she was grown up and Finn said NO!. I also liked it when Lady parsons put the twins and mrs Carter to work wich served them right. It was sad when Maia, Miss Minton, finn and professor Glastonberry had to leave paradise(the Xanti tribe). I did not like it when the Carters house went up in flames but the good thing about it was that the twins money went up in flames with it. I have always wished to actually be in the book and for the book to be real and to speak to the characters, but i know you cannot do it but still it is my fantasy and it will always be. ps i am really from australia

I really enjoyed this book and thought it was a great aventure, different from the rest of Eva Ibbotson's other books. The one thing that always annoyed me was that Maia was a perfect Heroine and had no faults. Pretty, gentle, smart, kind. I thought Finn and Minty were more realistic and easier to beleive as people. It would have been better if Maia had a bad temper or was terrified of something, frogs maybe? Over all, I thought that this was the best of Eva Ibbotson's books (so far) and I really liked it.

The journey to the river sea is a fantastic book. Some of the characters in the book are extremly well discribed. Also parts of the book are more the material of a nightmare. Yet some parts make me feel upset or worried, especially when the situation is fool proof or life threatening. It basically pulls you into the story, it's like you are maia and can see what she sees and feels what she feels.

Journey to the River Sea is THE most adventurous books I have ever read. It has that magical ability that few books have--the ability to wisk you away right into the story. Maia Fielding is an orphan who's parents died in a train crash in Egypt. Her father was an archaeologist and her mother was a singer. She attends a bording school until her guardian, an old man who is a lawyer, comes in contact with Maia's cousin, Clifford Carter. He has a wife a twins (who are girls). Maia is excited about taking the trip, but she is somewhat startled by her new governess' fierce features. Though Miss Minton (the governess) is stern, she is kind. On the boat ride Maia meets anV^ctor of about her age. He cries quite a lot for a boy of his age. Maia meets up with the family. Mrs Carter is a Lysol-freak, the twins are little money-grubbing pigs who live in a world of their own and Mr Carter is deeply in debt. Maia ends up taking an adventure with the mysterious Finn Taverner--half European, half Indean--Miss Minton and the Professor she meets at the Museum. With each adventure I feel as if I am inside the picture. Maia has overcome a lot, and she is a heroine, no less.

I think this is the best book i have ever read. it involves lots of interesting things including some funny parts about the twins. i wouldn't of read this book if a friend hadn't introduced it to me. Now i am very keen about it. It is a great book and i would have never ever enjoyed a book like this one.

I loved this book so much . It was very hard to put it down. Maia had an adventure I think anybody my age would dream of having. I think the author did a great job depicting the setting of this book. Even though the events in this book would never happen to anybody these days, it isn't so far up in the clouds that I can't imagine this happening to me!
