I like the part when Roger ate the chillies and drank a lot of water and got logged. It was funny. Roger is similar to oliver twist and cinderella.I don't like the circus master because he starved Roger so he would be hungery for the show. I also don't like billy and the other boys who made Roger rob a house. I like Bob and Joan because they were nice to Roger. I also like aurelia Ashington because she was nice to Roger too. I felt sorry and sad for Roger when he got starved. I really like this book. I think it was funny when Bob and Joan took Roger to the school, hospital, police station, orphanage and the city hall.I strongly recommend this book for children that are 9-18 years old. SO IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS BOOK, READ IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've only read to half way but I find it really interesting because the way that Roger does not know how to a boy and the way he acts, talks and behaves. It really wants to get you to read on.I'm not a real book fan but this is one of the best books ever and a would recommend it to younger readers.

I saw the movie Edward Scissorhands before I read "I was a rat". Edward and Roger are the same types of characters, they are misunderstood, people don't like them. Edward wheren't on a freak-show, but you feel that Edward Scissorhands and I Was A Rat are very similar to each other. I Was A Rat is more a book for younger readers, and Edward is a movie for more older watchers. It is one of the best book I've EVER read.

I loved this book. At some points in the book it was a little strange, but I still would give two thumbs up. One part when Mr.Tapscrew lied about rasing him and teaching him manner made me more angry then Bob. Again this is a great book and I love it. It should win a newberry honor award. P.S I loved the Golden Compass

I think this book was exciting and interesting because i liked the part wher Roger ate all of the chillies and then drank the water and became water logged.i disliked the circus master and the boys who tried to make him rob a house.I liked Bob,Joan and Roger.I also liked the part where he tore the bed sheets and made them into a nest.I hated the part where Roger was in the circus and was starved so he would be hungary when he was performing.I like Roger because he will eat anything and is not very clever.I don't think it is fair on Roger because he has lost his family.I think Bob and Joan are very careing.I have one thing left to say... EVERYONE WHO HASN'T READ SHOULD READ IT NOW!!

I think the book is a realy good book. The book explaned loads about Roger and how Bob and Joan looked after him,I think they did a grand job at it. It's a shame for Bob and Joan because they carnt have kids of there own.If they had kids they would make amazing and wonderful parents. The book made me feel sorry for Roger most the time and sad inside. The nasty man who worked at the fair made me want to stand up in front of the class when miss was reading and explode with anger. I think the book is manley for 18 year olds and younger to 10.The book has split with differant charecters such as Cinderella,Oliver Twist, the book has extrodanary describing words and descripsion what realy fitted in with the book I loved it !!!!!!!

I think this book is very funny and a bit of a fairy tale because of the way the author has pulled in characters from other books like Cinderella, Oliva Twist and The elves and the shoemaker.I feel sorry for Roger because he keeps getting into trouble like the time when he was dressed as a rat in the circus and starved so that he would be hungary when he was performing.I dont think it's fair on Roger because he goes to the police station, the orphanage and school.I like the characters Bob and Joan because they take Roger in and try to find his family.I don't like the the circus master and the boys who make him rob a house.I especially like the part when Roger eats the chillies and then drinks the water and becomes water logged.I also like Maryjane because she tries to help Roger as well as Bob and Joan.I think this is one of the best books i have read.

I thought this book was enjoyable and fun. Phillip pullman is a great author and I am currently reading one of his other books. This book is a bit like a fantasy story and ties in with 'Oliver Twist'and'Cinderella'.If you've not read this book I recomend it to you.It really starts to build up the tension half way through.

I was a rat was a great story because of the way the characters came into the story with bob and jone and roger (the rat) and the way the author explained them. The setting of the story was 10/10 i geuss it makes u think how should people treat animals becuase really there just like us becuase we are all of god's creatures. I strongly recommend this story to kids 8+ boys and girls.
zain, boy, age 10, from Leicester, United Kingdom, on 13th January 2005. Rating: 10/10
I think the book is a funny and interesting. (even though it was a bit sad) The book was about a shoe maker and his wife. One late night, a page boy stood at the door step. He was filthy and had torn clothes. Then he said " I was a rat!" It was the only thing he could say. Then bob and joan took him in. They gave the boy the name Rodger. Bob and Joan kept saying why did you come here. All he could say is " I was a rat" Then, they gave Rodger some food. Bob said " what do you say" " I was a rat" "say thank you" so Rodger said " thank you" As the book went on, Bob and Joan took Rodger to a lot of places. Police, hospital, school, lots of places. This book is funny and interesting so if you haven't read it yet, you should read it. I recomend this book to everyone over this world. It is a nerly perfect book. I hope you read it.

I have just read the book and found it great read. Throughout the book I kept on feeling sorry for Roger as he was made to do the most dreadful things due to his lack of knowledge, and sense!!! The tension build up nearing the end of the book was great. I kept on wanting to turn over a few more pages just so I could find out what happened next!! I really enjoyed this book, and would recommend it strongly to anyone else.
