I read that his books were 'Anti Christ' in notion and irreverent and so as a Christian dreaded reading them. I was interested in his books from a mystical and childish need to know, much like Lyra. He refers to no criticism of the Church that cannot be accounted for. He suffers no fools gladly and is a pioneer. He gives sympathy for God and treats him tenderly. He is not antichrist at all and beleives always in the power of Good. I so enjoyed this trilogy and could not put it down. It is a childrens book for children who have notheing left to beleive in. It simply fires the imagination and if evey parent told their children stories, or took the time to then the world would be a better place. He is much misjudged. Catherine Picairdeah

This book was easily as good as the first in the 'Dark Materials' trilogy, and continued on the epic adventure within this wonderful fantasy world. 'The Subtle Knife' rarely sits on my bookself, but on my bedside table whilst I re-read it for the hundredth time! From page one till the last, it is pure gold, written so well. Mr Pullman should be very proud.

WHOA..When I finshed the first book, i was completely amazed by book, as I wasnt keen on reading it the first place. Though when I finished the Subtle Knife, it was much better than i expected it to be. Infact, I was just BLOWN AWAY..It's truly inspiring and and I'm 100% sure that many many others feel the same thing.

Where do you start? this book was one of the best i have ever read! i totally loved the idea of the knife itself and how it could cut throught worlds just like that! though my favourite concept was how small openings into other worlds could be found if only looked at, at a certain angle, the idea was so explained and logical that it nearly made me want to walk around my street searching for an opening into another world(as it happens i didn't walk around my street looking for openings into other worlds, as everyone would have thought me a pure freak!). i have read the entire "his dark materials" trilogy and thought this book was the best of all 3. you absolutely have to read it!

I absolutely loved this book! I read it straight through, only stopping to do homework, eat, and sleep. It ends in a weird place but that didn't matter to me. I just picked up the next one and continued reading. The Golden Compass series will always be in my top 10 books of all time.

I think this book is great and i am not surprised it got in the top 5 on the best childrens book! I have read all three of the trilogy and the subtle knife is the most adventurous out of them! I really enjoyed where, near the beginning Lyra and Will get the knife. I hope if anyone reads it they will enjoy it.

I think this book was an absorbing read building the tension to the fantastic battle sequence in the Amber Spyglass. The plot was a bit con- fusing though.

This is a great book from a wonderfull series. Philip Pullman has the uncanny ability to entrance his readers. I was a sceptic of fantasy until I read this book, but now I recomend it to all. I definatly think it is worth reading no matter how different it is to what you would normally aproach.
